Weston's Fall Park Openings Are Built for Walking In

There will be no parking lot at the trailhead of Weston's newest trail. The Weston North Walking Nature Trail will run about 1.75 miles between Saddle Club Road and State Road 84. Its six-foot-wide path is made of coquina and mortar, and ten Robinia exercise stations will sit along the way. The City's project page says it plainly: "There is no designated parking; access is by walking or biking." It also says the trail system "is designed for local users."

That decision tells you something about Weston's projects this fall. The trail, the Windmill Ranch Park rebuild, and the work on Indian Trace and Weston Road are all listed by the City as due this fall. Each one adds smaller, closer, walk-up space for everyday exercise. Weston Regional Park keeps its role as the place for the City's big free nights out.

The trail is the first piece of a longer plan

The North trail isn't a one-off. The City calls it "a first step in developing a comprehensive greenway trail system throughout Weston to better connect neighborhoods and parks." The idea is to make the city easier to walk and bike, so you don't need a car to reach a park or an exercise path. The goal comes from the Parks Master Plan the City adopted in 2024. During that process, residents asked for more natural recreation such as nature trails and kayaking. The plan schedules more trails for its short-term phase, years one through three, and its mid-term phase, years four through six.

Some practical details from the project page:

  • Who can use it: walkers, runners, and cyclists. Leashed dogs are allowed, and motor vehicles of any kind are not.
  • Where to park if you live farther away: the City points to Indian Trace Park, and to nearby plazas where parking is permitted. Both are a short warm-up walk from the trailhead.
  • Cost: an estimated $655,785. A Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant covers $450,000 of it.
  • Timing: construction started in November 2025. Completion was first expected in May 2026 and has moved to "early Fall 2026." Westwind Contracting is the contractor.

The newest progress photo on the page is from July 2026. As of this writing, the page hasn't announced that the trail is open. The project page is the best place to check before you lace up.

Windmill Ranch is being rebuilt for more everyday use

Windmill Ranch Park, at 2900 Bonaventure Boulevard, follows the same thinking. The City's own reason for the rebuild is that the park "is currently under-utilized by the public at large." The new design adds an entrance directly from Bonaventure Boulevard and dedicated parking. The aim is to give the park "greater exposure" and give residents and visitors "an enhanced experience."

The Windmill Ranch project page lists these new amenities:

  • A multipurpose open play field and event lawn
  • An accessible playground with a shade canopy
  • A sand court for beach volleyball and beach tennis
  • A basketball and pickleball multicourt, plus Bankshot basketball
  • Exercise equipment, a shaded picnic area, and a soft-surface walking path
  • Restrooms, landscaping, and parking

Construction began on September 2, 2025, and the park is closed while the work continues. The page now gives the anticipated completion as "early Fall" without naming a year. One caution: Windmill Ranch's listing in the City's facility directory still says the closure runs through June 2026. The project page has the newer timeline.

Gator Run shows what the finished version looks like

To see where this is heading, go to Gator Run Park at 1101 Park Boulevard. It's open now. In a July 10, 2026 update, the City invited residents to try its two new full-size basketball courts with adjustable pickleball nets, new pavilions, a new playground, and expanded parking. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. It has a City parking lot and restrooms, and dogs are welcome on leashes up to six feet long.

Shared courts come up again and again in these projects. Gator Run's basketball courts double as pickleball courts. Windmill Ranch will get a basketball and pickleball multicourt and a sand court that serves two sports. Instead of building single-sport courts, the City is building courts that several groups can share.

Dedicated pickleball courts are a bigger, slower project. The City has a design for seven covered pickleball courts at Weston Regional Park, built together with a new maintenance building and yard. The design is complete and the project is out for bid, but start and completion dates are both listed as to be determined. For now, Gator Run is the newest finished place to play.

There's one closure for racquet players to know about. As of October 5, 2026, the City's park and field closures page lists the padel courts at Weston Racquet Club as closed.

The road work this month adds bike lanes

The road projects due this month support the same walk-and-bike goal.

  • Indian Trace Roadway Improvements, from Saddle Club Road east to I-75, include resurfacing, drainage work, buffered bike lanes, and accessibility upgrades. Pedrail Systems is the contractor. When the City last updated the page on October 2, 2026, completion was still expected in October 2026.
  • Weston Road Corridor Improvements, from Indian Trace to Griffin Road, cover resurfacing, drainage, sidewalks, curb ramps, and bicycle lanes. Completion is expected in October 2026.

Taken together with the trail, that's new sidewalks, curb ramps, and bike lanes on two of the city's main roads, plus a new greenway in the north end. The City's targets are October 2026 for both roads and early fall 2026 for the trail. Contact details for each project manager are on the Indian Trace project page if you have questions about lane closures.

Regional Park stays the place for big free nights

While the new spaces are small and nearby, the City's free events are still centered on Weston Regional Park at 20200 Saddle Club Road, with one exception at Library Park. Here's what's on the City calendar for the rest of the fall:

Date Event Where Time
Sat., Oct. 10 Mayors' Chess Challenge Weston Community Center, Regional Park 10 a.m. to noon
Sat., Oct. 10 Moonlight Movie: Zootopia 2 Regional Park Event Stage 8 to 9:45 p.m.
Fri., Oct. 16 Chillin' with BSO Regional Park Baseball Field #8 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Sat., Oct. 17 Chalk in the Park Library Park, 4255 Bonaventure Blvd. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 7 Moonlight Movie: Toy Story 5 Regional Park Event Stage 7:30 to 9:15 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 14 WestonNights Outdoor Concert with FLAVOR Regional Park Event Stage 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The Mayors' Chess Challenge is free, and Mayor Margaret Brown and the City Commission invite players to join. At the Moonlight Movies and the WestonNights concert, admission is free, chairs or blankets are encouraged, and dogs aren't allowed at Regional Park. The movie listings also say no alcohol. At the November 14 concert, food will be for sale. The Broward Sheriff's Office event on October 16 promises sports, ice cream, and activities, but the listing doesn't say whether there's a charge.

Chalk in the Park is presented with The Arts Council of Greater Weston. Admission is free, chalk is provided, and sidewalk squares go first come, first served.

The no-dogs rule makes a difference for planning. A family with a dog could walk the North trail with it on a leash once the trail opens, or bring it to Gator Run on a six-foot leash. On movie and concert nights at Regional Park, the dog stays home. The two kinds of park now serve different parts of the week. The full schedule is on the City of Weston events calendar, and the City's Rainout Line at 754-227-8999 posts weather-related field and park status.

Our team keeps track of these openings because the parks, trails, and road work near a home are part of what owning it is like day to day. That's true whether you're settling into your own place or managing a rental for tenants.
